A LOOK BACK AT MOMENTS
That Inspire Forward
PAST EVENTS
Throughout the year, we have the privilege of participating in a variety of events that honor the life, legacy, and lasting impact of Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois. From community celebrations and educational tours to historical commemorations and special presentations, each event offers an opportunity to reflect, connect, and continue the work Dr. Du Bois so passionately championed. We invite you to explore some of the memorable moments captured from our past events below.

During the 47th Annual Candlelight Vigil and Festival at MacGregor Park in Houston, Texas, we honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a moving event filled with celebration, remembrance, and community spirit. Jeffrey Alan Peck, great-grandson of W.E.B. Du Bois, proudly participated, speaking on the powerful topic, "W.E.B. Du Bois and Where Do We Go From Here?" Hosted by the Black Heritage Society Inc., this event featured a dynamic program of leaders, civil rights advocates, and storytellers, culminating with a beautiful candlelight march around the historic MLK Plaza. It was an inspiring afternoon filled with prayer, music, cultural showcases, and a heartfelt tribute to the ongoing work for justice, unity, and equality.
Evening w/Martin Luther King III-May 17 , 2026
Huge thanks to Kevin McCraw and Ahmad Steele, the owners of Quotes at Willowbrook Mall, for hosting us for the Documentary viewing! We witnessed the incredible journey of my Great Grandfather's life, filled with both triumphs and challenges, yet his dedication to humanity shone through. He was a man of unwavering principles, always standing firm in his beliefs and embodying strong morals and values. I am immensely proud of his legacy and committed to carrying it forward to the best of my ability. If you missed it tune in May 21st at 3am or record it.

Evening w/Martin Luther King III-May 17 , 2026
I had the distinct privilege of meeting Martin Luther King III this evening, and our conversation left a lasting impression on me. He shared a profound message, reminding me that while I may never walk in my great-grandfather's exact footsteps, I can honor his legacy by striving each day to become the very best version of myself. Those words resonated deeply because they reflect a truth that many descendants of influential leaders understand.
Carrying the legacy of someone who made such a significant impact on history can sometimes feel overwhelming. There is often an unspoken expectation to live up to a remarkable name, yet I have come to realize that much of that pressure is one we place upon ourselves. Rather than attempting to recreate the past, our responsibility is to preserve the values, principles, and vision that our ancestors stood for while making our own meaningful contributions to the world.
I am grateful for this encouraging reminder and for the opportunity to connect with someone who understands this unique journey. We are truly blessed to be part of families whose lives and sacrifices have helped shape history, and it is now our privilege to carry their legacies forward with humility, purpose, and integrity.

In the Media | Rebel with a Cause- May 3 , 2026
Film Director Rita Coburn has done a phenomenal job not just putting together this incredible documentary, she is promoting it on mainstream media . We are so excited to see Dr. Du Bois's Legacy catch fire and at such an opportune time. My Great Grandfather took on all the racist with intellect and courage. His message was fight for equal rights for all human beings, fight for civil rights, fight for quality education, fight for fair and equal job opportunities. Here we are in 2026 seeing equal rights, voting rights, civil rights, being dismantled. The Supreme Court is ignoring the Constitution and ruling based on orders from the President of the United States. In the Documentary you will see that this has happened before. This isn't new.
May 19th, on Malcolm X's birthday tune in to PBS,9/8 central time to see this amazing documentary about Dr.W.E.B. Du Bois.
It's a little emotional for me because when I see my grandmother in the documentary I think of my Mom. My grandmother passed away 6 years before my birth and I never got to meet her .
I am praying that we can bring Rita Coburn and Rebel with a Cause to Houston in June to celebrate Juneteenth. Bishop James Dixon II and many others are working behind the scenes with me to make this happen. I am so excited .

CAU Film Discussion- Apr 2, 2026
I had the privilege of joining Mrs. Rita Coburn and Dr. Karida Brown at Clark Atlanta University for an engaging and insightful conversation on the art of documentary filmmaking, with a special focus on Mrs. Coburn's approach to developing her documentary centered on the life and legacy of Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois. Hearing firsthand about the research, storytelling, creative process, and intentionality required to bring such an important historical figure to the screen was both inspiring and deeply educational. The discussion offered valuable perspectives on the responsibility of preserving history through film and the impact that thoughtful storytelling can have on future generations. As a descendant of Dr. Du Bois, it was especially meaningful to witness the dedication and care that went into ensuring his remarkable legacy continues to educate and inspire audiences around the world. I am grateful to Mrs. Coburn, Dr. Brown, and Clark Atlanta University for creating such a powerful learning experience and for their unwavering commitment to honoring one of America's greatest scholars and civil rights pioneers.

Premiere of A Rebel with a Cause- Apr 2 , 2026
I just want to take a moment to say how truly appreciative I am to Mrs. Rita Coburn for inviting me to the premiere of her incredible documentary, A Rebel with a Cause.
This feels like such a timely and necessary work—one that speaks not only to history, but to where we are right now.
A few years ago in New York, I had the privilege of meeting Mrs. Coburn at a W.E.B. Du Bois Museum Centre event, where she first shared that this film was on the way. I remember noticing she was alongside my mother’s longtime friend, Dr. David Levering Lewis—the dean of Du Bois scholars—which immediately captured my attention.
Then I saw the trailer… and I got chills. To see the story brought to life with voices like Dr. David Levering Lewis, Viola Davis, Jeffrey Wright, Common, Dr. Aldon Morris , Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, and Dr. Karida Brown—it’s powerful, it’s meaningful, and it’s deeply moving.

Celebration of Dr. King's Dream- Feb 23, 2026
We commemorate the birth of Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois, a distinguished humanitarian who championed the rights of all individuals, with a particular focus on advocating for marginalized communities of color. His work unequivocally demonstrated the profound capabilities of Black individuals, aligning them with the achievements of any other racial group. Dr. Du Bois was an exceptional intellectual, widely recognized as a foundational figure in the field of social studies. He holds the distinction of being the first African American graduate of Harvard University and was among a select group of American scholars to attend the University of Berlin. Furthermore, he was a pivotal co-founder of the NAACP. His unwavering commitment to global peace, despite facing potential incarceration, was ultimately recognized with the prestigious Lenin Peace Award. Dr. Du Bois was a staunch opponent of war and a vocal advocate for nuclear disarmament. His extensive accomplishments are too numerous to detail comprehensively in a single document, yet we express immense pride in his legacy. We honor his 158th birthday, acknowledging a truly extraordinary life.

The Historic Du Bois Residence- Feb 23, 2026
Last Friday, I had the distinct honor of visiting the residence constructed by my great-grandfather in Morgan Park, Baltimore, Maryland. The current proprietor graciously facilitated a tour of the property. During my visit, I observed books that previously belonged to my grandmother and mother. It is noteworthy that individuals frequently visit the property to photograph themselves in the doorway, a tradition I also upheld, thereby following in the footsteps of my ancestor. I extend my sincere gratitude to Dr. Philip Sinitiere for orchestrating this visit. The present owner inherited the property from her mother, who acquired it from my great-grandfather in the 1960s. The residence continues to house numerous artifacts left by DuBois.

A Tribute to Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois- Feb 4, 2026
The unveiling of the Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois sculpture represented a profoundly significant moment in my professional journey. It was a distinct honor and privilege to participate in this event, surrounded by esteemed colleagues who share a commitment to fostering a society where all individuals are afforded equal value, and where distinctions such as race, religion, or socioeconomic status do not create division. My great-grandfather dedicated his efforts to advancing freedom, justice, and liberty for all. On February 21st, I will be returning to his hometown of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to perform in a theatrical production that pays tribute to Dr. Du Bois and his enduring legacy. This performance will explore his life from various perspectives, ensuring that his historical contributions remain relevant and celebrated in 2026, particularly during Black History Month. We encourage your attendance as we honor this pivotal American figure
Celebration of Dr. King's Dream- Jan 19, 2026
On February 23rd, 1968, my mother, Yolande Du Bois Peck, had the distinct honor of meeting Dr. Martin Luther King to commemorate my Great Grandfather, Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois. Today, I had the privilege of celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, a few days following his birthday, during a dedicated holiday. I was joined by his nephew, Dr. Derek King. It is truly a remarkable experience to convene with the descendants of such influential figures and honor their legacies. I extend my sincere gratitude to Teresa Brewer, the Black Heritage Society, the entire committee, my pastor, Bishop James Dixon II, Mayor John Whitmire, LaDonna Parker, Crystal Jackson, Jeffrey Alan Peck Jr., and Bishop Don Ronnie Thompson, among others, whose presence and contributions made this event exceptionally impactful. The turnout for such an extraordinary individual, who championed a profound dream, was truly inspiring. I earnestly hope that collectively, we will all endeavor to contribute to a better world. Amen.

NAACP FUNDRAISING PODCAST- Dec 2, 2025
From 10 AM to 2 PM today, the NAACP hosted a fundraising podcast. Individuals with membership tenures ranging from two to fifty years articulated the significance of contributing to the nation's oldest civil rights organization. "Sarah's Oil" exemplifies the NAACP's commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations. The recent racial gerrymandering case further demonstrates the NAACP's dedication to protecting civil rights. We are actively seeking new members. Membership forms for youth, adult, women's, and corporate levels have been made available. For inquiries, please contact 713-526-3389 or email branch@naacphouston.org. We invite you to join us in our ongoing efforts to advance civil rights, equality, education, and fair housing for all. I do this in honor of all the giants whose shoulders we stand on. For me, it's mainly the legacy of my great-grandfather, Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois.

Thanksgiving Turkey Drive- Nov 27, 2025
Happy Thanksgiving to my family and friends. I began my day by joining Bishop James Dixon DMin and the Community of Faith at St. Mary's for Operation Turkey 2025. I observed several City Council Members and my esteemed colleague Ron Reynolds volunteering to distribute Thanksgiving dinners to those in need. My assignment led me to Independence Heights, where I collaborated with Crystal Jackson, DrDeborah Fields Harris and several church members to deliver Thanksgiving meals to senior citizens. I extend my sincere gratitude to Bishop James Dixon II for his unwavering dedication to community service. I am privileged to be a part of this initiative. I commend all Houston City Council members and Texas State Representative Ron Reynolds for dedicating their Thanksgiving to serving the community.

Uniting Nations Through the Legacy of Du Bois — Part 3- Aug 26, 2025
Part 3 of the Ghana Experience was the 62nd annual Celebration of the Passing of my Great Grandfather, Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois. It was an honor to have Steve Brown and Michelle Brown witness the Celebration alongside so many dignitaries from Ghana and the United States. I also had the pleasure of seeing my mentor and close friend, Dr. Philip Sinitiere, speak in Ghana for his very first visit, along with the Dean of all Du Bois Scholars, Dr. David Levering Lewis. I wasn't aware that an award-winning writer and professor was going to speak, and she didn't disappoint. Her name is Nikole Hannah Jones, and she also spoke a little about her book, 1619. I feel so fortunate to attend events like this and hear so much about our history, Black history, African history, and American history. I am also happy to know that so many people worldwide have so much respect and gratitude for Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois's legacy. I appreciate the incredible job the W.E.B. DuBois Museum Centre Committee does to put on these events every year. I want to give Special Thanks to 1st Lady Rawlings and the daughter of Kwame Nkrumah, Samia Nkrumah for always being present when we have an event. Both families mean a lot to the Du Bois family. I must mention Japhet Aryiku, the Director of the Museum, for all the hard work he has put into this project.

History Came Alive — Ghana Experience Part 2- Aug 25, 2025
Part 2 of our 8 day Ghana Tour. We visited The Du Bois Museum Centre and I had the pleasure of introducing the museum staff and my mother's side of the family starting with my Great Grandfather, DR.W.E.B.Du Bois. We took the tour of the over 8000 square foot home President Kwame Nkrumah provided for Dr. Du Bois and Shirley Graham Du Bois in 1961. My Great Grandfather was tasked with completing the Encyclopedia Africana which he made progress with despite being 93 when he started. Unfortunately at 95 on August 27th, the day before the march on Washington DC, in 1963, the Old Man, as many called him, passed away. We then visited the National Museum Gallery. This was a cultural museum that we really learned a bunch. We learned that many Ghanaian men had several wives but they always had to get permission from the original wife to get the second wife and then permission from both these women to bring in a 3rd or 4th wife. The main thing is he had to have the financial ability to take care of all these wives. I looked at Steve Brown and said, "that disqualifies me", lol . Steve said, Michelle Brown is all he will ever want and need. The last stop was the Kwame Nkrumah Museum and Park. I made a phone call and we had the pleasure of having Samia Nkrumah, the daughter of Kwame Nkrumah, to take the tour with us while being led by the most senior guide. We had a blast and we heard Samia's stories about her childhood as the daughter of the 1st President of Ghana. At the end of the tour we went upstairs to meet the Director of the Museum. He was a super nice gentleman. This was anything but a normal tour. I hope that Michelle and Steve will comment in the post about there experience. What a day, we are all maxed out and ready for dinner and some rest

Annual Du Bois Passing Day Trip — The Ghana Experience Begins- Aug 24, 2025
On August 24th I traveled to Ghana for my annual W.E.B.Du Bois passing day celebration which is August 27th. I also partnered with Torch Light Tours owned by Michael Orleans to have my 1st annual 8 day tour of Ghana. The tour started on August 25th with 2 of my special friends and classmates, Steve Brown and Michelle Brown. We had a friend of a friend named Austine accompany us as well. Our tour was given by 2 super nice gentlemen whom both go by the name Joseph. Both of these brothers were taller than 6'3" and one was about 6'5" so we could differentiate one from the other by calling one the tall Joseph or the shorter Joseph. On day one we had no clue what we signed up for but it was adventurous and emotional all wrapped up into one. Day 1 for the group was a meeting and greet and we later had dinner. Stay tuned for part 2 The Ghana Experience.

We Will Not Forget — Slavery Remembrance Day 2025- Aug 16, 2025
I had the honor of attending the 4th annual "Slavery Remembrance Day", founded by Congressman Al Green. My Pastor, Bishop James Dixon II gave us a brief history lesson and he spoke about how all history is important but our history seems to be the one under attack. Congressman Al Green spoke about how slaves not only built America but they built half of the world. Portugal, Britain, Spain, France, Netherlands, Brazil and the United States all took advantage of free slave labor. The message is clear, we want our history to be acknowledged and taught just like everyone else's history. We must not forget those who paved the way for us. State Representative Ron Reynolds spoke eloquently as always and so did Judson Robinson III. I solute all those who made this event a tremendous success and I notice the numbers are increasing so we may have to move to a larger venue next year. Keep our ancestors and their sacrifices in mind at all times, we must not forget them.

Together We Rise: Supporting Dr. Harris’s Doctoral Journey- Aug 15, 2025
I had the pleasure of attending a fundraiser for Dr. Deborah Harris whom is pursuing her second doctoral degree at Virginia University of Lynchburg in the School of Religion Doctor of Ministry Program. Thanks to Gatlin BBQ we had some of the best BBQ on the planet during the fundraiser. Please donate to this educational advancement if you are capable. The Zelle and cashapp info is on the flyer. Thank you in advance for your kindness and support Congratulations to my friend and church family member, Dr Deborah Harris. We stand with you.

Legacy in Action: Giving Back to Northeast Houston- Aug 13, 2025
Today was a special day for the W.E.B. Du Bois Legacy Foundation. We gave out 12 pairs of Nike sneakers to students from HISD who reside in the Northeast Houston community I came from, formerly North Forest ISD. We paid for the shoes and backpacks through the sales of three different styles of Du Bois T-shirts. Each shirt has its own unique quote on the back. I believe my great-grandfather would be delighted to know that through his Legacy Foundation, we are providing school supplies, backpacks, and clothing for children who attend schools in Houston and Ghana. This is only the beginning, and we hope to expand this program as we grow. I want to personally thank everyone who has purchased a T-shirt to support this program. The smiles on each child's face make all this worthwhile. Thank God for giving me this vision, and I will work hard to leave this earth better than I found it. Amen.

A Monumental Day of Love, Legacy & Honor- July 19, 2025
Today was an indescribable day filled with love, reverence, and deep respect for Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois as we unveiled a stunning bronze sculpture created in his likeness. Standing before this masterpiece was a moment I will never forget — a powerful reminder of his influence, his sacrifice, and the legacy he left for generations to come. I am profoundly grateful to every member of the Sculpture Committee for the dedication and vision that made this historic day possible. Thank you to Mr. Richard Blake for bringing this vision to life with such artistry and intention. Great Barrington is truly built different — the warmth, the support, and the genuine love I feel here is real, and it means everything. My heart is full today, and I know my Great Grandfather is smiling.

A Historic Unveiling in Great Barrington- July 17, 2025
Today was the private media day for the unveiling of my Great Grandfather's Sculpture. Richard Blake, from Blakes Sculpture, was in attendance to talk about the masterpiece he created. It was great to finally meet him and his family. I unveiled the sculpture with Ari Zoin and DuBois Thomas of the W.E.B.DuBois Sculpture Committee. I appreciate all the work the committee put in to make this a reality.
I met with the entire Library Executive board and I was given an opportunity to speak to the audience about my feelings concerning the sculpture and all the love they have shown me and my Great Grandfather. I truly love these people and all that they represent. Thank you Great Barrington Massachusetts for your open arms of love . This is my second home and one day I too will join my Mom and the Du Bois family to rest after my work is done.

A Historic 40-Year Celebration at the W.E.B. Du Bois Museum Centre- June 22, 2025
On June 22, 1985, President Jerry John Rawlings opened the W.E.B. Du Bois Museum Centre in Accra, Ghana, honoring my Great Grandfather alongside Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah. This past Sunday, I had the honor of serving as the keynote speaker for the 40th anniversary celebration, joined under one roof by Du Bois descendants, members of the Rawlings family—including Mrs. Rawlings—and Dr. Seoul Nkrumah, son of Kwame Nkrumah, who also spoke. Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman Rawlings shared remarks on behalf of the Rawlings family. It was a powerful gathering recognizing the significance of this museum and the legacy that ensured Du Bois’s body rests in its rightful home in the Motherland. Grateful thanks to Japhet Aryiku and the entire W.E.B. Du Bois Museum Centre Committee for making this celebration possible. I am honored to be part of this incredible work—these photos barely capture the moment.

47TH MLK Jr. Candlelight Vigil- May 3, 2025
It was an honor to speak at the 47th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight Vigil hosted by the Black Heritage Society. Being there reminded me of the responsibility we carry to continue the work of leaders like Dr. King and Dr. Du Bois, who fought fearlessly for justice and equality. We honor their sacrifices, but we must also recognize that the struggle is not over. We are living in a time where hard-won progress is being challenged and dismantled, and we cannot afford to be silent. We must stay united, stay vocal, and stay committed to protecting civil rights for ALL. The light we carried last night was more than symbolic—it was a promise that we will continue the fight. Our ancestors endured too much for us to retreat now. The work continues, and so will we.

Gate City Day Nursery Visit Atlanta, Georgia - April 16, 2025
During a recent trip to Atlanta, Georgia, I had the profound honor of touring the historic Gate City Day Nursery, co-founded in 1905 by my great-grandfather and Dr. Gertrude. This visit offered a powerful connection to the legacy of education and community uplift that W.E.B. Du Bois so passionately advocated for. Walking through the halls where generations of children have been nurtured was truly eye-opening. I was deeply moved by the unwavering dedication of the educators who continue to shape young minds, often without the recognition they deserve. It was a meaningful reminder of the lasting impact of those who commit their lives to teaching. Below are a few photos from this memorable visit.
Morris Brown College Event- April 16, 2025
Today, I had the incredible honor of accepting an award on behalf of the W.E.B. Du Bois family during the Morris Brown College Honors Convocation. It was a truly special celebration, with Dr. Toneyce Randolph delivering an inspiring keynote address centered around the powerful theme: "The Talented Tenth: A Legacy of Excellence and Freedom." The atmosphere was filled with pride and joy — a true testament to the spirit of excellence Dr. Du Bois envisioned. As Montell Jordan would say, "This is how we do it!" Congratulations to all the honor students on a job well done — it was a privilege to celebrate alongside you!
